Port Alfred ....

Monday 31st dawned bright and sunny as I rolled over and went back to sleep. Whoever said that you can sleep on a night flight is very much mistaken! Eventually I dragged myself out of bed and one hot shower and a glass of fresh orange later began to unpack and find my way around my two-bedroom home for the next two months. As you can see my views over West Beach and across to East Beach are absolutely stunning.

Time slipped away so breakfast became brunch when I walked over to Guido's. What to have “Guido's Beefburger” leapt out at me from the page along with a mug of coffee. I felt like one of those Discovery Channel American's stuffing my face as I cleared the last morsel, it was then that my sister let on that she usually shares one! Oh well some exercise was called for so I set out for a wander along the coast road to find Kelly's Beach which is the safest area to swim. The surfers use West Beach which also has quite an undertow.

It was a pleasant afternoon walk, bright sunshine and a cooling breeze. There are many holiday apartments alongside individual villas which give a diverse architecture without crowding the area. There are many board-walks along the scrub land between the beaches and the road which give a real holiday atmosphere to the place. It would appear that a lot of people from Johannesburg vacation here.

Reaching Kelly's Beach I discovered that the sea temperature is 19C, low tide 10:30 which is the best time to go for a swim and high tide 16:30 which is the best time to go for an aperitif. I took some photographs of the information boards as there is a tremendous amount of sea life in the area. A full time lifeguard is stationed here who was very strict on keeping the beach clean too. I was just about to set off back after watching the surfers for a while when I received a phone call, “Pick you up from the car park in 2 minutes”.

This cheese shop had been mentioned as one of 'the' places to go and they were right. They serve a fine range of South African wines, cheeses of all descriptions from around the world, pate from native animals all served with hot bread – delicious. Hmm – I keep saying that I am going to loose weight lol.

A beer or two back at Guido's before I drifted back to my villa and sleep ended a near perfect first day.
